I had a couple of beers with marty watching rugby before the launch of forget yourself but I wasn't yelling at the screen (we lost)

I'm always too aware of my "shuffle" sequences....to the point of predicting a good day/night from it{thankfully there's always the "FF" button to alter the future.....at the partay I sang at on sat night,one of the ladies asked{as a dare/ new and comedic experience},if I would,just for one set...replace the word "heart" for "arse" in the smulzy songs that they had put on my "human juke box,set list"...it was pretty funny....the standard"I will survive" done a bit more raw n raspy than they're used to.the lyrics being altered UM AH!{but they loved it and roared for more}the song NOW goes .."It took all the strength I had ,not to fall apart..just tryin hard to mend the pieces of my broken arse"....there's a laugh for ye all,mmmmmaybe {don't}try this at home...have a smashing night lovely ones...love,as always,genx xxxxx x

hi Steve, i really enjoyed the sat night triffids with you relaxing back in the studio with sparkle, eloquence (yessir) & a mischievious look in his eyes, you seemed very relaxed. Yes The Seabirds is a brilliant track, I was hoping you'd mention those very lines). While its a major faux pas to not have a church album there (how could they choose?! :).. it was kind of cool that 'Born Sandy Devotional' was one of the chosen few, or four I should say. I reckon if they decide to do another series (with Starfish), let others talk about it. I enjoyed hearing you talk about David M's work, the feelings it evoked, the lyrical landscapes that impressed, would be nice to see other peers do the same for Starfish. Just my opinion. OF course, some here would rather hear the Heyday story lol

as a displaced aussie in the UK, finding myself in an even more excluded position since I don't like soccer or either code of rugby - it's very disheartening to note that the weekend heralded the start of a new UK football season. it seems we don't even get two months without bloody football!
it's not a bad thing to not like ball sports, not a bad thing at all. in no way makes you a bad person. in no way makes me a bad person. the season's only been going 3 days and i'm terribly sick of it already.

I loved Hex from the minute I heard the first album - which was on headphones in May 1990, at 4.30 in the morning with the new sun shining into the room. Perfect, really. I couldn't believe how many wonderful songs there were, one after the other, the beauty of Donette's voice, the glorious melodies, god, I loved it. Still one of my 3 or 4 favourite Church 'side projects'. All these years later, it's nice to be able to say thanks, Steve.

great one today...i live right in the middle of football land. people are sports obsessed here...baseball too. it's alright though...i grew up with sports because of my dad...played a bunch as a kid. still watch a bit. don't do much yelling at the tv though. i'm usually fooling with my bass while i watch...but maybe if my teams loses i could smash my bass over the tv??? nahhh...don't have quite that much of testosterone.
steve...just watched the live video clips on the church's myspace site this weekend...good lord man...incredible! destination and ripple were my favorite...but something about easy though...that song just makes me happy. don't know exactly what or who you wrote it about, but i know what i connect it to in my life...love it.
by the way, tim plays his ass off on all of it...great drummer! would be great to have a magnetic strip tour live dvd, based on what i saw. i know all of us here would probably gobble it right up.

thanks for the hex story, i enjoyed that. I really love both of those albums - so ghostly, so ethereal, that soft beautiful voice combined with the poetry and poignancy of the lyrics... I got the Hex album off e-bay back when i was living in tokyo (someone i worked with introduced me to e-bay, and i went a little crazy buying all sorts of choich side projects and SK solo albums, back then when they were hard to find).
Anyway, i used to listen to Hex late at night, round 2 or 3am, after i'd finished writing, i guess to sorta keep the dream alive in a sense...
(speaking of crystal set, i just discovered their stuff recently, really really nice)
i've never been able to stand watching sports on tv either. bores the shit out of me. i remember long thanksgiving afternoons, dinner at an uncle's, everyone watching football or something, it always put me right to sleep.

I love the music of The Church...I am very partial to good theatre...I enjoy watching the rugby League and I am into AFL...bit of everything I spose.
I don't find them mutually exclusive...in fact I love the variance of experience. And by the way...i rarely drink alcohol when I do these things and I only yell at the TV in moments of weakness.
I have been known to clap and cheer and yell loudly when seeing The Church though!

I'm not into yelling at the telly for anything, but I do go down the footie every other week to support my local team.
It's a habit. It isn't theatre, it sure ain't glamorous, but it is time I spend with my old man. He's in his 70's now, lives on his own and it's OUR time. Something we've done together for 36 years. Male relationships can be tough and it's a time when we can be close which makes it special to me, even though the team is crap.
A friend of mine had a message from the beyond through a Flaming Lips video lately. She wouldn't tell anyone else just me 'cause she was afraid they would laugh at her. I definitely empathize with getting messages and signals about my life from weird coincidences. It's as good a ruler as anything. And I hate watching sports too. But I just drink beer and listen to records on the breaks.

Funny but i asked myself the same thing when the Tony Bennett duets special came on PBS last night...and besides the concept of love..maybe they are in love with the celebrity and the "thrill of the deal" when you reduce your art to numbers and what will sell??...they no doubt cling to the tried and true...no big gambits for these old crooners...

'88-'91 to my recollection I was featuring you, the church, and side showing hex on my college radio show. I was a DJ beyond those years, but that was the infancy...hm- trip hop makes me think of The Young Gods, Christian Death, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Ice T. Thanks for usually being on the beautiful side of that 'genre'.
Love songs- some are so trite!! The more abstract the better, just imply the emotion, the expression, like -most- of your love songs. Explicit seems so dated and harsh when I go back and listen yet the abstractions seem to grow- like I want to hear them more often now.
sports: I love tennis and I think I'd like to see a live cricket match since dear abby loves it. I know I know, the mens' club get so looney for that on TV and in person!

I think the romeos and crooners are missing the big picture...the word"love",is akin to the word "nice",in my opinion..very non descript and generically wasted in their phraseology....sometimes it's not what you reveal,in a song,but what you don't reveal,that tantalizes the ears of the audience...a great love song,strips itself bare without the use of tired and tacky lyrics...Ive never ever heard an SK lyric that wasn't brilliant...You should teach the gifts you have for words dear SIR!

I DO have the first origions of trip hop- oh, yowza. You shoulda stuck around Switzerland, France, Austria, West US during your 'Gold Afternoon Fix'trip..uh, tour. Trip hop was certainly on the lips of Sisters of Mercy and other pioneers before some critic took credit for the entire genre cira '90. Early '90's trip hoppers should pay a deep debt to artists like you, MC 900 ft. Jesus, American Music Club, Codiene who invented the roots in the late 80's.
